Sky Q Mini Box Not Connecting To Sky Q Main Box

Sky Q Mini Box Not Connecting To Sky Q Main Box: 5 Quick Fixes

Sky Q Mini boxes are excellent options to extend your viewing experience to other parts of your home, but sometimes these gadgets experience trouble connecting to the Sky Q Main box.

In this read, we’ll explain the reasons for this connectivity issue and how to fix it in no time.

Why won’t my Sky Q mini box connect to the main box?

  • The Sky Q Main and Mini box connectivity setup is misconfigured.
  • There is too much distance between the Main and Mini boxes.
  • Sky Q main and mini box are not configured correctly or are temporarily glitching.
  • Sky Mini and the main box are not connected to the same WiFi network.
  • Default Sky main box standby settings are causing connection delays with the mini box.

How do I reconnect my Sky mini box to Sky Q?

1. Reconfigure The Whole Setup

If your main Sky Q Mini and Main box are not set up correctly, both devices can lose connection. So, you may need to verify the whole setup.

First, reboot your Sky Minibox and the man box by pressing the “Standby” button on the remote, turning them off, and plugging the power cable at the mains. Now do these steps:

  • Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the Mini box and plug the other into your television.
  • Next, plug the Mini box power cable at the mains.
  • Press the “Home” button on the remote to turn it on.
  • Now press and hold the “1” and “3” buttons on the remote till four lights flash; continue with on-screen prompts to set up the TV with the mini box.

Do the following steps on the Sky Q main box:

  • Press and hold down the “WPS” button for 3 seconds on the Sky main box.
  • Wait for a couple of minutes for the Sky Mini box to connect to the main box.
  • Wait for another 10 minutes to let the box complete the network settings.
  • Finally, stream some channels and see if the disconnection issue persists.

2. Connect Both Boxes To the Same Network

Sky Q Mini box extends Sky content to other rooms and runs on the main box network configurations. The Mini box can only do its job when connected to the same Wi-Fi network the Sky Q Main box uses.

For this, use the Sky Q main box Wi-Fi mesh to establish the same network connection with one or more mini boxes. Alternatively, use an ethernet cable to connect your router to the mini box if you have Sky broadband.

3. Reinitiate Connection Between Sky Q and Mini Box

You can also try reinitiating the connection between both boxes to fix the connectivity issue in the following way:

  • Press the “Home” button on the Sky Q remote to access the Mini box “Settings.”
  • Select “Connection to Sky Q box.”
  • Select “Reactivate.”
  • While this process continues, head to the Sky Q main box, access the “Settings” menu, and select “Reactivate Watching via Mini.”
  • Once the process completes, reboot both boxes, and that’s about it.

If your Sky Q box is overheating, you’ll hear a loud fan noise that can also cause it to disconnect from other devices on the mesh network.

4. Use a Sky WiFi booster

It is possible your Sky Q Mini box is experiencing trouble connecting to the Main box because of the distance between both devices.

In this case, your best bet is to invest in a Sky Wi-Fi booster to extend the Wi-Fi signals to hard-to-reach areas in your home, where the mini boxes are connected to the TV.

An important thing to note here is that the Sky Wi-Fi booster can improve the signals, but if your network is slow, you have to troubleshoot these issues by:

  • Rebooting your router.
  • Contacting your internet service provider to troubleshoot bandwidth issues at the backend.
  • Switching to a better provider.

5. Disable Eco or Active Mode

Your Mini box continues to operate flawlessly even if the Sky Main box is in Standby mode. However, if you are experiencing disconnection issues, try switching the Sky Q Main box Eco or Active mode to “None.”

To do this, press the “Home” button on the Sky remote to access the main box “Settings” menu. Next, head to the “Setup” option, select “Preferences,” and choose “None” under “Standby Mode” settings.

Note: This method can also help you fix the Sky Q and Mini box disconnection issues at night.
